Ordering A “Custom-Made Humidor”

I would like to talk about custom-made humidors, but people have various reasons for ordering  anything “custom-made”.   What does “custom-made” mean exactly?  It means that if a potential buyer doesn’t see an item featured that he wants, there is the option to order a product that is different in some way.  I am referring here to products that are produced either by hand or in small quantities in a workshop or studio.  Many companies offer a set line of products and make no exceptions in choices.  Other companies might offer options in design and material.   These are the companies you would want to work with to order an item to your exact specifications. When placing a custom order, it’s best for the customer to discuss his or her options with the maker.  This is easier to do with a small company that is willing to work with the buyer…

A Unique Humidor Wood: Spalted Maple

Spalted Maple, A Unique Humidor Wood

Spalted Maple is a decorative, highly figured wood, with light and dark streaks which contrast with the lightness of the Maple.  It is very difficult to obtain, is not available commercially, and most pieces are very small.   It is very popular with woodworkers for the beauty and uniqueness of its grain.  Other pale woods such as sugar maple, birch and beech can become spalted, but Maple lends itself to the process and to the outcome because of its light color and hardness.   Spalted Maple is only found in log form, and the way these logs become “spalted” is fascinating.  The partial decay (spalting) happens when fungus begins to attack the wood causing the logs to have darker and lighter lines and streaks. These natural fungi grow on logs that are decaying the woods.  Key words here are water, temperature, oxygen and time.   There must be humidity, warmth, and exposure…

SPALTED MAPLE HUMIDOR: An Excellent Choice!

Spalted Maple Humidor

If you are thinking about purchasing one of Michael Dixon’s high-quality humidors you might consider Spalted Maple.  That’s because it’s such a beautiful, interesting and rare type of wood that makes a spectacular, high-quality humidor. Spalted Maple is caused by a process in which the Maple is exposed to decay fungi. This is a state that occurs before rot and final decay sets in.  Sometimes this process can take as long as two years.   Determining factors are humidity content in the wood, warm temperatures, plenty of oxygen, and the right type of fungi in the ground where the log is laying.  The result is the occurrence of black lines,  which mark the borders of the different fungi that are attacking the wood.  It only occurs in the outer sapwood areas of the log which is most commonly laying on the ground. For this reason, it is extremely difficult and expensive to obtain.  Spalted Maple is not commercially available…

Cigar Humidor Humidifiers by Michael Dixon

Humigar Exclusive Humidor Humidifiers for Michael Dixon Humidors

March 31, 2017 If you are reading this you are probably considering buying a Michael Dixon Humidor.  If so we would like to tell you about humidor humidifiers and moisturizers, specifically the Humigar.  The Humigar moisturizing system is exclusive to Michael Dixon Humidors and provides the ideal amount of humidification for our premium cigar humidors. It contains a piece of floral foam that absorbs water and slowly lets it evaporate into the interior of the humidor and into the cigars.  It is considered “passive” humidification.  (Click for more information on “passive” and “active” moisturizers.)  The photo here shows a “hybrid” D model humidor with the black Humigar, the tray for Boveda packs, and a hygrometer in place on the lid. Direct water evaporation is the fastest and most effective way to apply moisture into cigars which are like mini-sponges.  All our high-quality humidors come with a Humigar moisturizer and instructions…

Do you need a beautiful Michael Dixon Humidor for storing Valuables?

Michael Dixon Humidors Jewelry Box

Then, Michael Dixon Humidors is the right place for you to look. January 28, 2017 Even though our website is designed for customers who are looking for a high quality, American made humidor, we often get orders for our Michael Dixon Humidor models which are to be used for other purposes. The most common features of a well made cigar humidor are the tight seal, a moisturizer and a hygrometer to measure the humidity. However, take away these features and add dividers for jewelry and an ultra-suede interior and it becomes a jewelry box or a guitar accessory box. Take away the dividers and ultra-suede but keep the interior Sapele trim and it becomes a box for storing TV remotes. It could be a man’s valet box or a special box for a valuable antique book or precious small antique items. It could even be used as an urn. We have…

Gorgeous Wood Humidors – Michael Dixon

Wood Humidors

So Many Beautiful Woods to Choose From We are often asked by our customers, especially the ones who are having a hard time choosing a wood for their future custom humidor purchase, “What are the most popular woods that you sell?” Well, truthfully, the answer is that there are no ”most popular” woods because they are all popular and beautiful in their own special way. We don’t sell more of one type of wood than another. For instance each wood grain is distinctive whether it be pommele, curly, mottled, beeswing, lightning bolt, or quilted. There are also a variety of color combinations; Brazilian Rosewood – brick red to orange with black streaks, Indian Rosewood – dark purple and black streaks, Macassar Ebony – black with cream streaks, Curly Koa – light tan with brown to yellow streaks, and on and on it goes. So our potential customers have many choices…

Why I started making handcrafted and custom made cigar humidors

Michael Dixon Cigar Humidors

September 7, 2016 I was making wooden products for the home and office in the seventies, eighties and into the mid nineties. I participated in 30 to 40 art and craft shows a year. I traveled extensively throughout the East, from Boston to Miami and as far west as Kansas City and Madison, Wisconsin. Most of these events were weekend shows. So I was traveling and doing shows 4 or 5 days a week throughout the year. We made kitchen items such as a full line of laminated cutting boards, salt and pepper shakers, rolling pins, butcher block tables, etc. Probably 30 or 40 items. Then in the mid eighties we added a desk accessory line as well. So now I was carrying over fifty multiple items to each show and had about 15 employees helping me make several runs at a time. In the late eighties we added a…
