Spalted Maple is caused by a process in which the wood (maple) is exposed to decay fungi. It is a stage that occurs before rot and final decay sets in. It sometimes can take as long as two years before this process occurs and often it never occurs. The determining factors are humidity content in the wood (20-40%), warm temperatures (65-85 degrees F), plenty of oxygen (exposure to air), and the right type of fungi in the ground where the log is lying. The result is the occurrence of black lines, called "zone lines" which mark the borders of the different fungi that are attacking the wood. It only occurs in the outer sapwood areas of the log/tree and only after the tree is dead either standing but mostly on the ground.

For this reason it is extremely difficult and expensive to obtain. It is not commercially available and most pieces are extremely small. We are only able to offer this wood for a limited time only as we have obtained a limited supply from a local sawmill. We discard over 50% of the wood we buy mostly due to defects and lack of spalt. It is only available in the log form-not lumber. So we have to saw the logs into lumber, dry it down to 6-8% moisture content and then resaw and sand it to 1/8" thin sawn veneer in order to use it on the outer surface of one of our quality humidors. Obviously this is a time consuming process. One thing is certain however - we will go the extra mile to make a desktop humidor that no other humidor maker will attempt. So do not complain about the price! You are getting a one of a kind masterpiece from one of these puppies! Not to mention it takes 8-10 coats of catalyzed lacquer to seal and top coat as the decayed wood is very soft and needs to be protected by a heavier than normal finish.
