Model #87AQuilted Maple is a variation of the Big Leaf Maple which grows in the Pacific Northwest. It's range is from southwestern British Columbia to southern California. It is found more often growing among the stands of Douglas Fir and Cedars in Oregon and Washington states. The "quilt" is said to be a form of tree compression. As the inner core of the tree rots and disintegrates with age, the tree actually sinks down and compresses the outer cambium layers of the trunk thus causing a compression of the grain and wood fibers. When the log is cut it resembles a quilted pattern or figure which is highly prized in both veneer and lumber. The veneer form usually offers the most spectacular figures. It is a soft textured hardwood and is difficult to sand and finish. But the finished product is an eye-popping delight for anyone wanting a very unique American made cigar humidor.
