The best quality oak trees in the U.S. grow mainly in the Appalachian mountains of the mid-Atlantic region - from North Carolina to New York. Of the oak species 80% are Red Oak and 20% are White Oak. Red Oak lumber is very popular and is used in the furniture, paneling and flooring industries. White Oak is much less available and therefore, more valuable than Red Oak. White Oak can easily hold liquids and has been used for centuries in the cooperage industry for whiskey and wine barrels.

Both oaks have elongated rays that are exposed when cut on a rift angle at the sawmill. This is difficult to do as the angle has to be between 45 and 90 degrees. So most sawmills are not interested in cutting it due to the difficulty. Therefore it is very rare and not easily obtained.

Fortunately we have a local sawmill nearby that specializes in cutting a variety of high quality timber logs of many species. So when they obtain a large high quality White Oak log, they will cut it on the rift angle to expose the rays. We in turn use it to feature a truly historic looking humidor that blends well with the period oak furniture of previous centuries.
